CD-ROM Series "The Cell"

The cell is the basic structural unit of living matter. It is the smallest morphological unit in any organism. Knowledge of its construction, ultrastructure and basic functions is already part of today's school curriculum. The spatial complexity of the structures it comprises and the dynamic processes taking place inside it can only be unsatisfactorily represented with the medium of the classic school textbook.

IWF Knowledge and Media produces a CD-ROM series "The Cell" in which scientific facts will be presented with a strong visual impact as a contribution to understanding of the topic "Cell Organization and Cell Interaction". The co-operation between the IWF and the head of the "Working Group for Kinematic Cell Research" at the University of Frankfurt-am-Main, Professor Dr. Jürgen Bereiter-Hahn, ensures the scientific accuracy of this CD-ROM.

When using the interactive CD-ROM the user can proceed according to his/her individual requirements while learning. In the process, he/she can determine the manner and the path of his/her progression according to his/her current knowledge and interests. In numerous, high-quality film sequences, the user can observe the processes in the cell him-/herself. Three-dimensional interactively rotary objects enable him/her to perceive the structure of the expatiated cell constituents. In a virtual laboratory, experiments can be "conducted" by the user. If the user wants to test the knowledge thus obtained, a question-and-answer catalogue is available.

The multimedia learning compendium on cellular biology is available on CD-ROM for individual learning or as a media collection for local networks. On the Internet, at www.cells.de, there is additional information for pupils and teachers.

The four-part CD-ROM series "The Cell" compiles modules into thematic blocks:

  • Life from Light and Air – Chloroplasts and Photosynthesis
    With the following special distinction:
  • IAMS Multimedia Award, 9th Congress of the International Association for Media in Science 2000, Paris
  • Comenius Medal, European Media Competition Comenius 2000, Berlin
  • Special Mention in the category of knowledge and discovery, Europrix Multi Media Art 1999, Tampere, Finland
  • 34,95 Euro (incl. VAT), more information

  • The Powerplant – Mitochondrion and Catabolic Metabolism
    With the following special distinction:
  • Premio Especial del Jurado, XXII Bienal International de Cine Cientifico 2002, Ronda, Spain
  • DGerman Educational Software Prize Digita 2002 in the category of general education school, Education Fair 2002, Cologne
  • 34,95 Euro (incl. VAT), more information

  • Inner Boundaries – Membranes and Transport
Awarded the Comenius Medal 2002 of the Association for Education and Information (GPI), Berlin
34,95 Euro (incl. VAT), more information

  • Kern des Lebens – Vom Gen zum Protein [Nucleus of Live – From Gene to Proteins]
34,95 Euro (incl. VAT), only in German, more information

The multimedia CD-ROM is designed for pupils of the upper grammar school level and for students in their introductory semesters in Biology and Medicine and is suitable in particular for individual learning. It is intended to supplement, but not replace the existing curriculum. The modules are embedded in a standard user interface with different accesses. The knowledge is prepared in an appealing manner with videos, 3D animation and experiments in the virtual laboratory. A glossary, quiz and help texts round off the learning aid.

The CD-ROM can run on various operating systems and is optimized for single terminal use. For this reason it can be used for regular classroom instruction only to a limited extent
