Membranes control the exchange of materials with the
cell's surroundings and divide the interior of the cell into different
compartments, such as Golgi apparatus or endoplasmic reticulum, where
specific biochemical reactions take place. The basic characteristics of
membranes as well as their functions are described in detail by computer
animation and both 2D and 3D graphics. Interactive laboratory experiments
lead to in-depth knowledge about the general composition of membranes and
about processes such as diffusion, osmosis or volume regulation. 3D
animations and numerous video films are used to illustrate the dynamic
nature of membrane organisation within cells.

Membranes |
General topics
This chapter informs on the characteristics of biomembranes. 2D and 3D
animations explain e.g. the structure of phospholipids as important membrane
components or structure and function of proteins (pores, channels,
receptors) embedded inside the membrane.

Cell membranes
Here plasma membrane, Golgi zone and endoplasmic
reticulum are dealt with.
Plasma membrane: Numerous 2D animations and microscopic shots show
the complex and manifold functions as barrier-and transport function, pump
mechanisms at membranes, receptor functions, signal transmission as well as
signal propagation. In a laboratory concerned with the topic of "Cell volume
regulation" there are different objects to examine. Electron microscopical
images show the different forms of surface structures of epithelial cells,
EM shots and graphics inform on the different cell junctions such as
desmosomes, gap junctions and tight junctions.
3D models and animations, fluorescence and electron microscopical shots
provide you with insights into the fine structure and function of the
Golgi apparatus.
The special structural characteristics of the endoplasmic reticulum
as well as on its distribution within the cell are demonstrated in
fluorescence and light microscopic shots; 2D animations inform on the
individual steps of protein synthesis and show how the proteins move from
the ER to the Golgi apparatus. Fluorescence shots give evidence on the
function of the ER as a calcium depot.

Membranes main
menu
The membrane main menu gives an overview of the membrane systems of the
cell. You learn how substances are transported between the individual
membrane compartments in the cell and out of the cell. Six 3D animations can
be chosen and show details of processes such as phagocytosis, endocytosis or
exocytosis.

Virtual lab
Proof of the bilayer structure of membranes
In this experiment you are to test the hypothesis that intact membranes
consist of a double layer of phospholipids. In the first part of the
experiment the total surface area of the membranes used in the
experiment has to be calculated. After having broken the membranes down
into individual phospholipid molecules you determine with the help of
the the Langmuir balance how large the surface is that is covered by the
monomolecular phospholipid layer.

Diffusion and osmosis
The aim of this experiment is to measure the pure
diffusion potential of a cell as a function of the external medium.
Additionally several animations explain the physical basics of the
diffusion potential: free diffusion, diffusion barrier, diffusion
potential, voltage-driven ion transport (electrophoresis), osmosis,
turgor and ion transport in living cells.

Tour manager
With the Tour Manager you can select a series of modules that you
would like to "work through" consecutively. Quiz questions corresponding
to the individual modules are asked at the end of the respective module.
You can save different tours as files and access them again later.
