Mitochondria are the organelles in which the most
important energy-providing catabolic processes take place. There, the
energy obtained through nutrition is converted into an energy form usable
by the cell. Mitochondria, the power plants of the cell, are found both in
animal and in plant cells. In addition to 3D models and computer
animations, photographs illustrate their structural and functional
characteristics whilst employing special electron, light and laser
microscopic techniques to provide depth to the presentation. A versatile
and ingenious navigation system the programme provides three different
routes for the user's journey through the mitochondrion.
This second CD-ROM of the series about cell biology has been awarded the
Digita 2002 for cinematographic excellence.

Function
The complicated biochemical processes that
make up cellular respiration are shown in an interactive animation. Steps in
the degradation of fat, and storage substances as starch and glycogen, as
well as fermentation and calcium regulation by mitochondria are vividly
explained in detail.
During an interactive computer animation related to the respiratory chain,
the user is required to investigate where exactly toxins such as cyanide,
rotenone, antimycin or FCCP launch their devastating attacks. Interactive
animations present the details of the tricarboxylic-acid cycle.
Structure
3D models and EM-shots show the structure of
mitochondria as well as the influence of ADP and ATP on the inner
mitochondrial membrane. Video film demonstrations of living mitochondria,
achieved by different recording techniques, give testimony to the highly
dynamic nature of these cell organelles.
Reproduction and protein import
Light microscopical and EM shots demonstrate the
cleavage and fusion of mitochondria, and the importation of proteins into
the mitochondrion is explained by a computer animation.

Basic principles
ATP and NAD
|
ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) is the universal energy
currency of the cell. NAD (Nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide) functions as
a redox reactant. The structure and function of these two important
molecules in metabolism are shown in detail.

ATP
|
ATP-Synthase
|
As a result of our co-operation with leading scientists
the latest findings on the structure and function of the ATP-synthase
molecule could be incorporated into our presentation. A 3D model
illustrates how conformation changes and ATP production are related.

Virtual lab: respiratory activity of mitochondria
The oxygen consumption of mitochondria can be
made visible in this interactive laboratory experiment. Which substrates do
mitochondria need in order to be able to respire? Several substrate
combinations can be tested.
Films
All the films of the learning program are listed and
can be accessed individually.
Quiz
The Quiz gives you the opportunity to test your
acquired knowledge on the function, structure and reproduction of
mitochondria and the outcomes of the experiments.
Glossary
The glossary offers explanations of terminology used
in the program.
3D-lab
In the 3D-Lab 3-D models of cells and molecules can
be explored.
