Description In plant cells the cell membrane is enclosed in an outer cell wall.[1]

Its formation between two cells at termination of mitosis can be demonstrated on the anther filament cells of Tradescantia. The cell has been caught in the division stage known as anaphase where the chromatids are moving apart toward the cell poles. The phragmoplast orients itself between them. The cell plate now appears in the vertical aspect. It fuses with the side walls. It gives rise to the middle lamella of the new cell wall.[2]

The cell wall arises from apposition of cellulose.[3]

It continues to grow during the period of cell growth. Lignin deposition characterizes the process of wood formation in the cell walls. The protoplast dies. The lignified cells lend the plant mechanical stability and can help with the transport of water.[4-6]
