Description Under dim white light, the plate-like chloroplast of the green alga Mougeotia changes its orientation from edge-position to plane-position. In strong white light the chloroplasts change their orientation from plane-position to edge-position. The movement is shown 100 times speeded up [1].

The movement in bright light is shown again. the filamentous structures in the cytoplasm have been referred to as bundles of microfilaments which are thought to be responsible for the rotation of the chloroplasts [2].

If only a part of the cell is illuminated, the exclusively the corresponding part of the chloroplast shows the reponse. This proves the response is locally mediated. The chloroplast of the partially illuminated cell reacts faster than those of neighouring cells [1].
