Cell structure - Golgi apparatus - Golgi Apparatus in Prymnesium
Golgi Apparatus in Prymnesium
| Description |
The Golgi apparatus consists of stacks of flat membranous sacs. It can only be visualized by electron microscopy. Under the light microscope, however, its synthesizing activities can be observed in the alga Prymnesium.[1]
The Golgi apparatus serves to prepare and package substances for export to other parts of the cell. Here it is secreting scales for inclusing in the cell wall.[2]
The electron micrograph shows stacks of cisterns in a dictyosome, with scales of cellulose-rich material inside.[3]
The fibrillar structure of the dissected scales can be recognized in top view.[4]
The cisterns fuse with the plasma membrane and empty their contents at regular intervals. In doing so the scales are built into the cell wall.[5]
