Description The large heliozoan Echinosphaerium extends numerous long axopodia. Each axopodium contains a bundle of microtubules. [1]

Under a polarizing microscope, the microtubule bundles are seen as radially arranged shafts of light. [2]

An electron micrograph of a cross-sectioned axopodium reveals hundreds of microtubules arranged in a double helix. [3]

If the mitotic inhibitor colchicine is added to the medium, the axopodia shorten due to the breakdown of the microtubules they contain. [4, 5]

Here the colchicine is washed out of the organism. The first step in the recovery process is the formation of short microtubules. Then the axopodia extend outward as the microtubules are reassembled. This indicates that the sub-units of the microtubule, the tubulin dimers were not destroyed in the drug treated cell. [6]
