  Tips to play the videos

Description In Nitella the chloroplasts are located in the stationary subcortical protoplasm. At the boundary between the subcortical and the streaming inner protoplasm are subcortical fibrils [1], seen here with the aid of a scanning microscope [2].

Isolated droplets of protoplasm from internodial cells of Nitella show movement: groups of chloroplasts rotate. Nearby are rotating bundles of filaments, which consist of actin and frequently assume a polygonal shape [1].

With video enhanced microscopy subcortical fibrils in rhizoids can also be visualized. They consist of F-actin. Particles are transported either along the fibrils or in their immediate vicinity [3].
