| Description |
Here are two stomata in the epidermis pealed from the underside. Gas bubbles, present because the specimen was mounted in water, escape from the slit-like gaps when the stomate open Opening is accelerated by the addition of 0.1 micromolar solution of fusicoccin [1].
Closing is induced by the addition of a 10 micromolar solution of the plant hormone abscisic acid. The pores close due to a decrease in volume of the guard cells, accompanied by a swelling of neighbouring cells. The opening and closing of the pores regulates gas exchange and therefore transpiration [2].
