  Tips to play the videos

Description In Paramecium, food vacuoles only form at one specialized region of the cell surface. These vacuoles detach from this mouth region and travel on a well defined pathway through the cytoplasm. This journey through the cytoplasm, which takes about thirty minutes, is termed cyclosis. the cyclic streaming not only conveys food vacuoles, but also mineral crystals of unknown function, here seen as bright objects with polarised illumination combined with time lapse cinematography.
