| Description |
The unicellular desmids move by gliding along the substarate, as shown here with Closterium and Micrasterias [1]. The movement, in this case of Micrasterias, is caused by the secretion of mucilage. The mucilage is visible as a white trail after the addition of Indian ink. the movement is speeded up 240 times [2]. The mucilage is secreted alternatly from one or other of two groups of pores at the left and right side of the polar lobe, swells and pushes the cell forward. the path of the cell is wavelike [3].
