| Description |
Heterostegina depressa is a shelled foraminiferan which glides along the sea bottom in the tropics and obtains nourishment from photosynthesis performed by symbiotic algae. Specimens of the megalospheric generation, as shown here, measure form 2 to 4 mm in length. The protoplasm of this cell, shown here with time lapse cinematography, is in the preliminary stages of multiple fission. The protoplasm flows outwards through pores in the shell, where it becomes organized into numerous daughter cells and residual protoplasm. In this phase of apparent inactivity, each daughter cell constructs the first and then the second chamber of ist shell. The reinitiation of obvious movement indicates that the dispersion of the daughter cells is about to begin. The dispersion of the daughter cells is taken care of by the remaining protoplasm of the mother cell, since the daughter cells are not yet able to move independantly.
