Description A great number of proteins are synthesized on the ribosomes of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER). In addition to membrane-bound ones, soluble proteins are also synthesized there. The latter are destined for other compartments or are to be secreted.
Proteins leave the ER in membrane vesicles. These vesicles migrate to the cis-side of the Golgi apparatus. The soluble proteins from the ER reach the interior of the Golgi complex, whereas the membrane proteins distribute themselves in the Golgi membranes.
Receptors in the Golgi membranes recognize the proteins intended for the endoplasmic reticulum by a specific amino acid sequence. The ER proteins are sorted out and redistributed. This ensures that no ER proteins reach other compartments via the Golgi apparatus.
